Description of Itinerary

The Serra de Monchique, which is part of the Natura 2000 Network, is characterised as having the properties of a Mediterranean area with a strong Atlantic influence and high levels of rainfall.

It is the climate in the region, particularly in areas with a higher altitude where levels of annual rainfall are over twice that experienced in most of the Algarve that influences the unique flora, which differs greatly from the rest of the region's vegetation.

It is in this natural setting of great biological and landscape richness that the monumental trees that make up this Route can be found. Some are located in an agricultural or forest environment and others in an urban environment, flanking roads or in public and private gardens.

The Monumental Trees Route comprises three circuits: Vila Circuit (6.30 km); Fóia Circuit (17 km) and Picota Circuit (27 km). They all start at the São Sebastião Square, near the Tourist Information Office, where there is free parking for the car and located near the bus stops from and to Portimão, Alferce and Marmelete.
