Once you’ve parked at Fonte Férrea Park, cool off with some of the ferrous water from the fountain. Go past the café and follow the paved road alongside the stream.
Point 1 will show you when to turn off onto a dirt track on your left, after the sign pointing to the Car Park. Keep following the stream until you reach a ruin on the left. Though several paths turn off here, follow the main trail, which is the flattest and keeps going straight ahead, alongside the stream.
Before you reach the clearing, take the steep path off to the right. Keep to the main track until you reach the EN 2 and then turn left. Head up a narrow road, where you’ll find Point 2.
Follow the main path and then take the first right after the ruins of the old windmill. Follow the main path, which will eventually turn right until you reach Point 3.
When you reach the primary school and the monument dedicated to Estanco Louro, turn left and walk along the road for about 500 m, keeping as close to the edge as possible. At Point 4, you’ll see an arrow pointing to a dirt track on the right. Follow it. Keep to the path and cross the bridge farther on.
Turn right when you get to the noria, following the trail that will lead you through cork oaks, past vegetable patches, a large water tank and the old canal. At the well, keep right and keep going straight at the end of the trail, along a narrow path between the houses. Next, follow a walled path on the left until you reach Point 5, where an arrow tells you to turn left.
Keep following the path and then turn down a dirt track on the right. Point 6 is located before the house, where an arrow tells you to turn right.
Follow the main path past a house, turn left and then follow the walled path, which is also on the left.
Follow the main path. Turn left at the junction towards the tarmacked road, then turn left towards Alportel.
When you get to Largo do Alportel (Alportel Square), turn left to visit the Chapel of São José and Alportel Museum.
Follow the road, going straight ahead towards Outeiro, and ignore the road on the left that goes up to EN 2. Take the wider road on the left, which goes uphill after the well and the bend in the road. Turn left when you reach the top, and you’ll soon find yourself at the EN 2 once again. Turn right towards Fonte Férrea, along the same path you took at the start.
